BLACK IS THE NEW NEUTRAL!

I am sure you have noticed that black is having a HUGE moment in #InteriorDesign !
Window frames, cabinets, walls, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, and appliances! Just to name a few jumping on the color trend wagon.  And we are loving it!

Greenfield Cabinetry

Its residential soft opening was late 2017 when people decided gold and white needed a BFF.  Little did gold know that black was going to be stealing the show!  Due to its versatility black can be used in many different design styles; modern, transitional, traditional and all that is in-between.  Gold on the other hand only went as far as accent pieces, namely fixtures and hardware.

The first place I noticed blacks unveiling was as a window frame upgrade in the residential world. Not long after that it was being used as the new accent color on pillows, throws, accent lighting and furnishing statement pieces throughout homes.

BUT WHY BLACK?

We are in a design movement my friends! You are probably wondering; what is a design movement?

Design movements, at their simplest form, are styles distinguished by changes in eras.  All the styles created through history have a direct effect on the history of design.  Interior design is influenced by current events of social behavior, politics, economics, technology, and more.

When determining layouts, selecting materials, and finishes for any interior these all shape the final design… Sorry went deep there for a moment!  But seriously, this is true!

Check out Widewalls brief write up of the 20th century design movements timeline   https://www.widewalls.ch/magazine/20th-century-design-movements to see the design movements in chronological order.  This is a great site for those who want to know more about each movement or an easy skim to get a feel for what trends have already passed.

SO WHAT DOES THIS MOVEMENT LOOK LIKE?

Black meets Natural!

The neutral color is black, and it plays well with natural finishes and materials.  I mean black goes with everything, am I right?

It will showcase simple lines, contrasting colors, and an abundance of natural light.  This movement is well balanced and bold.  Mixes metals and blends multiple tones of wood finishes and textures.

This new trend of black will only be part of what this eras final design movement will be.

One thing is for certain, 2020 has been a gloom and doom year!  We have all been hostages of our homes and design will be dramatically changing to reflect and improve how spaces feel, function and look.

Until then enjoy black!  #Design
